It’s right there in the title: Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap is all about wiping out waves of orcs, and it makes the process as fun and chaotic as it sounds. This tower defense-style game mixes strategic trap placement with fast-paced combat, and while it doesn’t pull any punches in difficulty, it’s a blast once you get into the rhythm.
Each match kicks off with a prep phase where you can set up traps around the battlefield. There’s no time limit here, so you’re free to plan your defense carefully. But you do have limited resources, which means you’ll need to make smart decisions about what traps to use and where to place them. Some options, like barricades, are free but limited in quantity, so managing your build is key.
The strategy lies in how well you can manipulate the orcs’ path. You’ll get a preview of their spawn points and routes, letting you steer them into the deadliest setups possible. And with everything from spike traps to lava pits to wall-mounted arrow shooters at your disposal, there’s no shortage of creative ways to make orcs regret stepping into your map.
But you’re not just a passive trap-setter. You can jump into the action yourself, taking down enemies with your character’s own weapons and abilities. Whether you prefer magic, ranged weapons, or close combat, you’ll find a loadout that fits your playstyle. That said, don’t expect to do all the heavy lifting solo: your traps are still your best defense.
As each wave rolls in, the challenge ramps up. More spawn points open up, new enemy types appear, and eventually, you’ll face off against bosses that test everything you’ve learned. Survive long enough, and you’ll earn rewards that can be spent on upgrades and buffs back at your hub castle between runs.
There’s a solid solo experience here, but Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap really comes alive in co-op. With up to four players working together, you can divide responsibilities, cover more ground, and build even more complex trap networks. Communication is key, though, so it’s best experienced with friends rather than random teammates.
What makes it so enjoyable is that perfect mix of planning and action. Nailing a trap setup that wipes out an entire wave is deeply satisfying, and there’s a real sense of progression as you improve your strategies and unlock new tools. It’s not the easiest game, but if you’re up for the challenge the payoff is worth it.
Whether you’re playing solo or with a crew, Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap is a clever and chaotic take on the tower defense genre. It asks you to think strategically, react quickly, and work smart. And when it all clicks? Pure orc-slaying bliss.
Orcs Must Die: Deathtrap review: In summary
Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap delivers a satisfying mix of tower defense and action combat, putting you in charge of stopping waves of orcs using traps, strategy, and brute force. Whether you’re laying out deadly combos of lava pits and spike traps or jumping into the fray with your own weapons, it keeps you thinking and reacting. While tough at times, especially solo, it’s even more fun in co-op—making it a chaotic, strategic, and highly entertaining orc-slaying experience.
